GOWA

Teachable Moments for Apache Children

When

9:30 – 10:30 a.m., Today

Gowa — meaning “home” in Apache — is an early literacy program. This innovative initiative helps young children build strong foundations in reading, speaking, and listening while celebrating the knowledge and values of their community.

Through everyday “teachable moments” — from storytelling and song to family activities and play — Gowa empowers parents, grandparents, and caregivers to be a child’s first and most important teachers. The program blends research-based literacy practices with Apache cultural, fostering not only early reading skills but also identity, confidence, and connection to heritage.
